How to answer the phone in Japanese.

Let’s see how to say hi in Japanese when you answer the phone call. So, in Japan, we don’t use Konnichiha, or Ohayougozaimasu as usual conversations over the phone. Let’s take a look at specific words on phone calls so that you can use it on business situations or on private situations.

1, Odenwa Arigatougozaimasu ( おでんわありがとうございます)

2,Itumo osewaninatteorimasu (いつもおせわになっております)

3,Omatase itashimasita (おまたせいたしました)

4,Moshi Moshi (もしもし)

1, Odenwa Arigatougozaimasu ( おでんわありがとうございます)

This is the most popular and politest phrase to say hi over the phone. This one’s just in business situations and not used in casual situations. Furthermore, this should be used when you could answer the phone within 3 calls. ( You know Japanese are too polite to hate being late? )

2,Itumo osewaninatteorimasu (いつもおせわになっております)

This word is used just for someone you have known, mainly for your business partners. Since this phrase is Keigo(けいご、honorific expression) , you don’t use it for personally connected people like your friends, family and your partners etc.

3,Omatase itashimasita (おまたせいたしました)

This word is used when you missed the phone withing 3 calls and try to answer the phone afterwards. This phrase actually means “Sorry for kept you waiting.” But I’m not sure about those who have different backgrounds will apologize if you can’t respond the phone within 3 calls, probably not right?

4,Moshi Moshi (もしもし)

This word is the most useful phrase in daily life over the phone. If you’ve got phone call on your own phone, you can use this phrase anytime and also, if you couldn’t hear the voice of someone on the phone, you can repeat Moshi Moshi to show that you couldn’t hear him/her well.
